SURFACE MISSION
With the revolutionary mindset of Silicon Valley as a backdrop, Surface produced its first issue in 1993, keying off the optimistic spirit of the Bay Area to launch their search for the next wave of inquisitive, innovative artists. Tapping into the subversive countercultures of San Francisco, the magazine gained renown across the country and soon established a national base of fans, a diverse and insightful group of tastemakers that immediately identified with and embodied the aesthetic and mission of the magazine.
Surface was one of the first titles to embrace an interdisciplinary approach to covering the many fields of the design sphere. What truly set the company apart, however, was its ability to put into action the crossover qualities of design, fine art, popular culture and the industrial arts without falling into the trade mindset. With this catalytic potential at its core, Surface began to not only play a larger role in promoting design as a cultural force, but also birthed a singular view of the American avant garde, a visionary sensibility that celebrated modern living with an incisive edge.
Experimenting with visual expression to produce a signature graphic identity and push the boundaries of art direction, Surface specialized in intelligent narratives set to lush imagery, setting the bar higher for the design-publishing world. Its readership continued to grow as people turned to the magazine for creative inspiration, coverage of the burgeoning design world, and profiles of the emerging talents and provocative projects that were reshaping the creative landscape. With this ability to identify (and collaborate with) undiscovered design stars – from furniture makers to photographers – Surface has grown into a cultural barometer of global style in all its forms, equally important to industry insiders and creative professionals as it is to those simply looking for trends that elicit the evolution of American culture.
Capitalizing on its collaborative ethos, Surface began to move “beyond the book,” by creating three-dimensional programs and celebrations of design ideas and visionaries. Such groundbreaking projects that reflect this ability include the Avant Guardian Project, TAG Team and Bombay Sapphire’s Pop-Up Concept Store. By being able to bring together fresh minds, progressive manufacturers and the various disciplines of visual culture, the magazine sets itself apart from its competitors.
Today, Surface is a universally acclaimed brand, recognized as an authority on the evolving world of modern design. Blossoming from its San Francisco roots into a multicultural, international force headquartered in New York, with a network of satellite editors around the globe, the magazine is constantly expanding its ability to identify, celebrate and support the artists and ideas that bridge the present with the future. Poised to inspire, inform and innovate, Surface is the penultimate American source for engaging, intelligent and curated content on all that is inventive and compelling in the design world.
